The Barbarian

I have compiled a set of Barbarian rules inspired by various online sources, as well as the 2e Barbarians Handbook. Please see below.

As always, feedback is welcome.

Ability Requirements: 14 Strength, 9 Dexterity, 14 Constitution. Barbarians do not get bonus XP for high ability scores.

Hit Dice: 1d12 per level

XP: Advance as a ranger

Other abilities:

Exceptional Abilities: Like Fighters, Barbarians can benefit from 18+ exceptional Strength, as well as bonus HP for high Constitution.

Movement: Barbarians movement is 15, rather than 12 (human standard). This applies when they are wearing armor that grants a base AC of greater than 4.

Climbing: Barbarians can climb as a thief of equal level to their own, provided they are in light armor.

Bonus AC: Barbarians start with a base AC of 7, which decreases by 1 every odd level. If they wear armor that has a better armor class, than that value will supersede this ability.

Surprise: Like elves and rangers, Barbarians are surprised only on a roll of 1 on 1d6.

Rage: Once per day per 4 levels, the Barbarian may enter into a rage. They gain the following abilities for a number of rounds equal to their constitution score:

  • +2 to all melee (or thrown weapon) attacks and damage rolls.
  • +2 hp per level. These hit points are lost before any others, and any remaining at the end of the rage are also lost.
  • +2 to saving throws vs mind-affecting spells.
  • Ability to complete ignore the damage from a single attack of their choice during the rage.
  • Ability to make one extra melee attack against a target in range whenever they fell an enemy

At the end of the Barbarian's Rage, they must make a saving throw vs Death. If they fail the saving throw, they suffer from exhaustion for the next hour. An exhausted Barbarian will have -2 to all attack and damage rolls, a +2 AC penalty, and lose their climbing and enhanced movement abilities.

In addition, during a rage the Barbarian will not know how many hit points they have left, or how much damage their opponents are doing with their attacks. They must rely on the limited descriptions that they receive. Finally, the only valid combat actions for a raging Barbarian are: Strike Blows, Discharge Missile Weapon (only if thrown) and Charge.
